Gram’s Sourdough Starter

I have been wanting to share my grandma's recipe box for years. I think the sourdough starter is a great place to begin. She was a wonderful baker...Her pies were legendary! And she had really cool writing.

Sourdough Starter

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Package Yeast
  • 2 1/2 Cups Warm Water
  • 2 Cups Sifted Flour
  • 1 Tbsp Sugar

INSTRUCTIONS

Dissolve yeast in 1/2 cup of the water in a large glass bowl. Stir in the remaining water, flour, and sugar. Beat the mixture until it is smooth. Cover with cheesecloth. Let stand at room temperature for 5 days, stirring 2-3 times per day. Cover and refrigerate.

Feed your starter each week by adding 3/4 cup water, 3/4 cup flour, and 1 tsp sugar to the mixture. If you plan on using the starter in baking, take the mixture out of the refrigerator at least an hour prior to use. Don't forget to feed it prior to returning to the refrigerator.
